Laura Powell has worked in the travel industry for more than 25 years, both as a journalist and as a consultant. Laura helped create CNN’s original travel programming, and was CNN’s first travel reporter. After leaving the network, Laura has become a prolific freelance contributor to outlets ranging from The Washington Post and USA Today to CNN.com and Good Housekeeping. Currently, Laura is a correspondent for Skift. She writes about luxury and wellness tourism, along with issues involving tourism strategy and overtourism. She also appears on television and radio programs across the United States to discuss travel topics. Recent appearances include Great Day Washington and WGN Radio.
In addition to her journalism work, Laura works as a tourism industry consultant. Over the years, she has worked with scores of clients on a wide variety of projects. Among her clients have been destinations like Washington, DC, Wisconsin and Idaho; travel associations like U.S. Travel, Destinations International and the American Hotel & Lodging Association; and organizations like The National Trust for Historic Preservation.
